Founded in 2001, Midway Contemporary Art in Minneapolis has established itself as an important site for the development of new work by emerging and under-recognized artists. Curator and Executive Director John Rasmussen travels frequently to locate challenging work and forge relationships with international artists interested in realizing their vision in the US. The organization works closely with artists over multiple years to encourage deep investigation and experimentation and to introduce artists to the local community. Resulting commissions form the majority of Midway’s exhibition program, which is complemented by frequent artist-led events, an ambitious publication series, and one of the region’s finest independent art libraries

They are alert to the urgent need to expand the conventions of art history and criticism with ideas from other discourses, such as black studies, transnational and diaspora studies, gender and women’s studies, and LGBT studies. The work of lesser known and overlooked artists and art communities continues to be mined, with writers articulating new ways to counter the striking imbalances of race, class and gender that continue to affect the arts and the culture industry.”
