Recess partners with artists to build a more just and equitable creative community. By welcoming radical thinkers to reimagine and reshape their world, Recess defines and advances the possibilities of contemporary art. Recess’ programs offer space and resources to generate innovative art and ideas that challenge dominant narratives. Recess is always free and open to the public to serve as a meeting place for meaningful exchange and action across a multiplicity of communities. Recess strives to set a high bar for the level of support they give each artist and develops avenues to create deeper, more long-term commitments to the artists they serve. Recess supports the repatriation of working artists in established and or gentrified space.

“The Warhol Foundation aims to support the full range of artistic activity in America—from exhibitions at major museums to neighborhood projects by artist collectives. Arts writers, through the range and specialization of their individual interests, touch upon all of this activity—illuminating and interrogating it and bringing it into conversation with the public. Support for artists is not complete without support for the circulation and serious consideration of their ideas. The Arts Writers Grant program keeps artists at the center of cultural dialogue and debate—in our opinion, right where they belong.”
