Beyond Bauhaus is a more than yearlong series of exhibitions, publications and commissioned installations featuring contemporary artists whose practices are inspired by or respondent to the history of Bauhaus (1919-1933), the German art school so influential on modern art, architecture, craft, design and education. Beyond Bauhaus coincided with the centennial of the founding of the Bauhaus, which left a legacy based on radical experimentation in all the arts. Through solo exhibitions, group shows, public art installations and online projects, Beyond Bauhaus highlighted the lasting impact of the Bauhaus on creative practice and on the interdisciplinary nature of arts education. The exhibitions were complemented by two publications: a scholarly catalogue that includes essays by the curator, art historians, and artists, and International Style, a digital publication to accompany the online exhibition.
Beyond Bauhaus
“The Warhol Foundation aims to support the full range of artistic activity in America—from exhibitions at major museums to neighborhood projects by artist collectives. Arts writers, through the range and specialization of their individual interests, touch upon all of this activity—illuminating and interrogating it and bringing it into conversation with the public. Support for artists is not complete without support for the circulation and serious consideration of their ideas. The Arts Writers Grant program keeps artists at the center of cultural dialogue and debate—in our opinion, right where they belong.”
