Dr. Agustín Arteaga joined the Dallas Museum of Art as Eugene McDermott Director in 2016. Under his leadership the museum has focused on diversifying its exhibition and educational programs to reflect the diverse communities of Dallas with the goal of creating a sense of welcome for all.
He enlarged the Curatorial Department from five to twelve full time curators, creating three new positions dedicated to Latin American Art, Islamic and Medieval Art, and Works on Paper, as well as reinvigorating the Contemporary Art Department with curators dedicated to African American Art and African Diaspora and the Arts of Asia.
Dr. Arteaga has also overseen the diversification of museum leadership to better mirror city demographics, and facilitated access to the arts for the region’s large Hispanic community by establishing the museum’s Bilingual Initiative ensuring all exhibitions’ interpretation materials are now presented in both English and Spanish.
Prior to his tenure at the Dallas Museum, Arteaga served as the director of the Museo Nacional de Arte (MUNAL) in Mexico City, one of Mexico’s largest and most prominent cultural institutions. Additionally, he was the director of the Museo de Arte de Ponce (MAP) in Puerto Rico, and the founding director of the contemporary art museum Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA) Fundación Costantini in Argentina. Arteaga has organized more than 100 exhibitions over the course of his career, including major monographic presentations of Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Diego Rivera.
