Blue Start Contemporary was founded by artists and grown from a grassroots art exhibition in 1986, Blue Star Contemporary is the first and longest-running nonprofit space for contemporary art in San Antonio. BSC’s programs have grown, activating positive change in the art community and community-at-large. Blue Star presents an international array of artists, giving them the opportunity to create new work in its spacious, flexible galleries. In an effort to promote greater awareness among its constituents, curatorial preference is given to artists and projects that encourage empathy and inspire compassion.

Philip Johnson commissioned Warhol to make a large-scale work for the exterior for his pavilion for the New York World’s Fair, along with other artists. Warhol’s provocative response, a multiple portrait of ‘Most Wanted Men’ was installed a few days before the opening but was deemed too inflammatory and contrary to the upbeat image of the World’s Fair and the work was taken down.
