Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library is an American estate and museum located on more than one thousand acres of protected meadow, woodlands, and waterways in Winterthur, Delaware. The museum’s collection of over 90,000 objects includes exquisite examples of American decorative and fine arts dating from 1640 to 1860. By opening up its collections to contemporary artists, the exhibition Transformations: Contemporary Artists at Winterthur signals the start of a new chapter for the museum, allowing historic objects to be seen in new contexts, bringing personal narratives and forgotten histories forward through time. Transformations features more than thirty nationally recognized artists whose work draws inspiration from the historic collections of the museum, garden, and library. Building off of museum founder Henry Francis duPont’s highly collaborative mode of collecting, the exhibition encourages deep engagement between artists, the collection, and the public.
